know your RISK?
After the incidents of people dropping dead at the MRT track cooled off for quite awhile, it has resurfaced again. Well, not really dropping dead but people falling down onto the track and people being pushed. People committing suicide. And once again they decided to execute all this during the peak periods. Like weekend nights and early in the morning when people are rushing for work. Sheeeesh.

Anyway, my weekend is going to be burned because of World Heart Day. The theme is as per my topic for this entry. "Know Your Risk". See, people don't realise that cardiovascular dieseas is the number 1 killer in Singapore. Its not cancer, its not kidney failure and certainly, not through jumping off MRT tracks. Heart diseases, stroke and cardiovascular tops all that. It accounts for 31.7% of all deaths in Singapore. So, people who think that this is something which does not strike any fear in them, are wrong.

Sudden cardiac arrests are getting common nowadays. Imagine somebody walking along the street, or window-shopping at a shopping mall, suddenly drops in front of you. It happened before and it WILL happen again. And when that happens, everyone panics. And what do they do? Call 995. But by just calling 995, will that be enough? What these people need is IMMEDIATE attention which means CPR on the spot itself. And do everyone know CPR? I'm afraid not. Statiscally, Asians are ignorant or are faking ignorance about this and don't think it is of any importance to know and learn CPR. But the matter of fact is, it may happen to any of our family members at home. Have you read about people who is fit suddenly drops and lay motionless on the ground? If not, where have you people been? Just working and not reading or watching the news? There's more to life than earning money in this world.

This 2-day event is to reach out to the public and promote heart health in Singapore. I know teenagers and youngsters won't go to these events without much publicity because to a certain extent, I won't be interested to go either. But working for this organisation may just give me a wake up call.
